Initially, WFMH was made up of societies from 46 different countries, rather than individual members or nations.
Years later, World Mental Health Day was first celebrated on October 10, 1992, thanks to Richard C. Hunter, who was the Deputy Secretary-General of the WFMH during the time. Since then, this day has been observed every year. In 1994, the organisation started using a specific theme for the day, which was suggested by then Secretary-General Eugene Brody.
