How Weather Change Affects Your Ear Health

Weather change has profound impacts on human health, intensifying existing health problems and creating new ones due to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and environmental changes. Rising global temperatures shifts in precipitation patterns, and more frequent and intense heat waves, storms, floods and droughts all affect human well-being.

For example, heatwaves can lead to heatstroke, and dehydration, and exacerbate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, particularly among the elderly and vulnerable populations. The summer and monsoon seasons significantly influence the prevalence of viral diseases due to various environmental and climatic factors. During these seasons, increased humidity and rainfall create favourable conditions for the proliferation of viruses and their vectors.

Often no one cares about ear health, attention is paid only when experiencing some discomfort. In rare instances, climate change may affect ear health, requiring the need to maintain it. Weather change significantly contributes to ear-related health issues, particularly during the monsoon season when increased humidity creates a conducive environment for bacteria and fungi.

High humidity levels during the monsoon can lead to excess moisture in the ear canal, promoting the growth of bacteria and fungi. This can result in conditions like otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer’s ear, which causes inflammation and infection. The warm, moist environment fosters the proliferation of fungi, leading to infections such as otomycosis. This condition can cause itching, discomfort, and discharge from the ear. When cold water enters the ear, especially the inner ear, it can disrupt the normal functioning of the auditory system. This can lead to sensations of fullness, muffled hearing, and even temporary hearing loss.

In some cases, trapped water can result in an infection, leading to symptoms such as pain, dizziness, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Daily exercise ensures proper circulation of blood in the ear. Exercise helps fight against bacterial and fungal infections. and helps reduce inflammation in the ear. Drinking enough water helps keep the ear hydrated and relieves the problem of irritation or infection. At the same time, it reduces the spread of ear infections. Even after taking necessary precautions, if ear problems occur, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist immediately.
