Durga Puja celebrates goddess Durga’s triumph over demon Mahishasura. This victory symbolises the power of good over evil, and the protection of dharma. Durga Puja is not only a religious event but also a celebration of Bengali culture, featuring music, dance, art and drama. Pandals are set up, where the idols are displayed and worshipped. The festival ends with the immersion of the Durga idols in rivers or water bodies, symbolising the goddess’ return to her celestial home.
Durga Puja is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
Durga Puja is typically celebrated in the months of September or October, depending on the lunar calendar. The festival lasts for several days, culminating on Dashami (Vijaya Dashami).
Key rituals include the installation of the idol, daily prayers (puja), cultural programs, and the immersion of the idol in water on Dashami.
The festival is divided into various phases:
Traditional foods include khichuri, puli bhora, labra, and various sweets like sandesh and rasgulla.
The immersion symbolizes the goddess’s return to her celestial home and is a way to bid farewell until next year.
Celebrations include decorating homes and pandals, performing cultural dances and music, organizing fairs, and participating in community feasts.
While it is most prominent in West Bengal, Durga Puja is celebrated in various forms across India and in countries with significant Bengali communities.
On Dashami, married women apply sindoor (vermilion) to each other and to the goddess, symbolizing the arrival of married life and blessings.
You can use phrases like “Shubho Pujo” or “Happy Durga Puja” in messages or cards to convey your wishes.
