Sharad Purnima, also known as Kojagiri Purnima or Raas Purnima, is celebrated on the full moon night of the Ashwin month. This important Hindu festival signifies the conclusion of the monsoon season and is steeped in religious and mythological significance. This year, according to Drik Panchang, Sharad Purnima is being observed on October 16. Sharad Purnima is marked in various parts of India, particularly Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. On this auspicious day, devotees worship divine pairs such as Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayana.
Rooted in Hindu mythology, this festival is believed to occur when the moon shines at its fullest. Tradition holds that on this night, Goddess Lakshmi descends to Earth to bestow her blessings upon the people. During this sacred occasion, kheer is a traditional dish that plays a special role in the rituals. Additionally, Sharad Purnima honours the divine dance known as rasa lila, the night when Lord Krishna danced with the gopis of Braj. This dance symbolises the union of the individual soul with the supreme soul.
The Purnima tithi will begin at 08.40 am on October 16 and will end at 04.55 pm on October 17. The moonrise on Sharad Purnima day will be at 5:05 PM.
